Digital media is a non-intrusive, responsive and contemporary way of engaging audiences in the stories of a place. It allows visitors to choose the level of interpretation they wish to have and is respectful to the environment.
SHP has recently moved into digital media. We have produced a number of popular audio tours and films over the last several years and in 2013 launched our first App, the Convict Road App, which was shortlisted for the 2013 Telstra Australian Mobile App Awards.

Convict Road iPhone App
Dharug National Park, NSW
Client: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service
Date: 2012-13
SHP created a pilot Smartphone App for the World Heritage listed Old Great North Road (OGNR) while developing the OGNR Interpretation Plan in 2011. In 2012, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service subsequently received an Australian Government Grant to fund the App’s development.
The App, which was launched on the App Store on 11 June 2013, is designed for use on the road and before and after visiting the site. Tours of the road use maps, films, text and images and enable visitors to tailor their experiences according to their own interests. The content allows people to experience the ‘hidden histories’ of the road through a series of short filmed depictions of convict life, focusing on the smells, sights and sounds of the road. The content also features filmed interviews with experts on the road, including park rangers, archaeologists and historians.
The Convict Road App was a finalist in the 2013 Australian Mobile Awards.

Maitland, New South Wales
Client: Maitland Gaol
Date: 2012
SHP was engaged to develop the Children’s Audio Tour and Escapes Audio Tour for Maitland Gaol and revise its existing General Audio Tour in 2012. SHP planned the tours and researched and wrote the scripts for the two new tours.
‘Snitch the Rat’ is the ghostly narrator of the Children’s Tour, which takes primary school aged kids on an adventure through the Gaol’s 150-year history. The Escapes Tour tells the intriguing and sometimes dark stories of the numerous escape attempts inmates have made from Maitland Gaol. The tours were launched in late 2012.
