Point Nepean National Park Heritage Interpretation Plan and Developed Design

We delivered an Interpretation Plan for Point Nepean National Park that provides a clear strategy for communicating the natural heritage, Aboriginal and European heritage of this State and National Heritage-listed site.

In 2020, SHP was engaged by Parks Victoria to deliver an Interpretation Delivery Project for Point Nepean National Park in 2020. This work was one of the key initiatives to deliver the Point Nepean National Park Master Plan, which aimed to reveal the special qualities of the park and highlight the many and unique stories of the site as a cultural landscape.

SHP’s contract encompassed the revitalisation of the Quarantine Station Disinfecting Complex, the creation of a Style Guide that recommended 2D & 3D design solutions sensitive to the fabric of the site and interpretive media solutions that were environmentally and economically sustainable. Our work also involved story, signage and experience mapping, journey planning for trails, geolocation of all interpretive installations and tender evaluation.

The site’s more confronting stories will be featured in dedicated zones in the disinfecting complex and old cemetery and add to visitors’ understandings of the evolution of philosophies about disease and quarantine practices.

A key feature of this is a poignant animation that shows how migrants experienced the process of disinfecting themselves and their luggage. Our team researched the experiences of real people who landed at the quarantine station. We then built a storyboard based on our research and historical photographs to reconstruct the story of two former quarantine station residents. Finally, we worked with illustrator Seith Teoh and animator Diane Yuri to develop a compelling animation that sits at the heart of the Disinfecting Complex.
